The first UK exhibition of Sarah Lucas’s works from last year’s Venice Biennale.

In 2015 Lucas created a series of ten sculptures, collectively known as the Muses, for the British Pavilion. Three of these works – which depict the female nude, arrested at the waist, in different poses – make their UK debut at this exhibition.

Lucas used her friends as models, casting the sculptures by applying plaster bandage directly onto their bodies. As the mould doesn’t survive this method, it means there’s very little room for refining the figure or idealising it. Bawdy and explicit, the pieces embody defiant femininity. Pauline and Yoko are seated on chairs while Michele lies on a desk.

The casts share a charged dialogue with the classical sculptures in the Sir John Soane Museum collection.
