This exhibition has now closed, find out what else is going on at The Bowes Museum

Featuring extravagant catwalk creations from Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Balenciaga, Prada and Gucci.

Originating with the ancient profession of the plumassier, feathers have been used in fashion design for hundreds of years. This exhibition – originally shown at the MoMu Fashion Museum in Antwerp – explores their associations with refinement, luxury and romance, drawing on the work of the world's leading designers.

Among the highlights are samples from one of the last traditional feather studios, Parisian Maison Lemarié, which were produced specially for this exhibition. These rare pieces are shown alongside fans, hats and haute couture items, as well as an unusual pair of feather shoes from Rogier Vivier.
