Working primarily with High Definition video and text, the artist explores the way in which we perceive, communicate and filter information.
Atkins' videos combine layered images with interrupted excerpts of singing, speech, subtitles and handwriting. For this exhibition – his largest in the UK to date – he presents a site-specific adaption of his new multi-screen work, Ribbons.
Working with a specialist in computer generated animation, Atkins creates nightmarish environments populated by ambiguous virtual characters. He describes the male figure that appears in these works as ‘a character that is literally a model, is demonstrably empty – a surrogate and a vessel’.
Shown alongside installations of text, images and accompanying videos, the exhibition reveals the ambivalent relationship that exists between the real and virtual.
