Paintings, photographs and artefacts are used to look back over the 400 years since Penzance gained its Charter of Incorporation in May 1614.

Internationally renowned scientist and inventor Humphry Davy, who was born in the town in 1778, is one of the key figures of the exhibition.

The Penzance native is best known for his experiments with gases, such as nitrous oxide – or laughing gas – which he once said he believed to ‘bestow all of the benefits of alcohol while being devoid of its flaws’.
