This first European retrospective of the US artist's work encompasses photography, film, video, and drawing spanning more than 30 years.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Simpson rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with a series of large-scale works combining photographs and text. Although the prose adds significance to the images, the connection is allusive rather than documentary.

In the 1990s, she began printing large multi-panel photographs on felt, with text panels being used to indicate locations and encounters. This evolved into film and video work, which finds individuals engaging in conversations that address issues such as identity and desire.

More recently, Simpson has been working on a project to replicate archival photographs from the 1950s, posing herself to mimic the originals.
