Oneself As Another

Royal West of England Academy

7 February – 26 March 2014

£2 with National Art Pass (standard entry £4.50)

Curated in partnership with bo.lee projects, the exhibition brings together painters, sculptors and photographers whose work explores the individual’s sense of ‘self’.

Leading 20th century painters such as Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon are shown alongside contemporary and emerging artists, who favour a more alternative approach to portraiture.

For example, the Damaged Human series by Sarah Ball consists of miniature portraits derived from medical archive photographs, while other featured names include Wanda Bernardino, Johan Andersson and Bob Carlos Clarke.

Don't miss

The exhibition will be the first showing of Sanctae, an Arts Council England-funded installation by South West based artist Ione Rucquoi. An architecturally-devised space within the gallery, it is inhabited by larger-than-life photographic images of naked, female subjects, adorned with individually painted gold-leaf halos.
