The Serpentine is the first UK venue to host a solo exhibition of the Italian born artist, a five time participant in the Venice Biennale.

Fittingly, Merz's first exhibition since winning the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2013 Venice Biennale includes a selection of sculptures, paintings and installations that celebrate her 50 year career.

Throughout the late 1960s, Merz was actively involved with the Arte Povera movement; the only woman to be affiliated with the Turin-based group.

She often works with textiles and uses a range of craft techniques, such as weaving and knitting, but has also linked them with Arte Povera's call to embrace 'poor' or 'low' materials, such as nylon, copper and iron.
