Haroon Mirza

The Hepworth Wakefield

25 May – 29 September 2013

An exhibition by the internationally acclaimed artist who creates large-scale installations involving light, sound and movement.

Haroon Mirza won the Silver Lion for most promising young artist at the Venice Biennale in 2011. An artist who has become known for using sound to address music’s contested place in religious cultures, his new exhibition features audio compositions and light installations.

Mirza questions the idea that art is transcendent and distinct from the everyday, creating assemblages that come to life, pulsing and clacking to their own electric beat, in order to refute the concept that art is self-contained.

Don't miss

A listening room where visitors can hear sounds that normally go unheard or unnoticed. In particular the buzz and hum of electricity from a light installation the artist has made in another room. Other sounds will feature the River Calder’s weir, which flows rapidly past the gallery but is usually insulated by the building.
