Over the past 18 months, the Whitechapel Gallery has hosted five displays of art from the Government Art Collection, each selected by a different group around a specific theme. This Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery exhibition unites all five displays, from Simon Schama’s exploratory romp through the collection to a survey of 60 years of GAC commissions.

Don't miss

The loose theme leads to some unexpected contrasts, as Old Master paintings hang alongside radical pieces by the Young British Artists.
