A career-spanning survey of works by a fixture of the American art world.

The work of Alex Katz, acquisitions of which have frequently been supported by the Art Fund, is to be shown in a wide-ranging retrospective covering six decades. Katz made his name as a figure who bridged the gap between two generations of American artists – Abstract Expressionism and Pop. His work anticipated the latter of these two movements, with its remarkable slightness, simplicity and bold use of colour, but also looks back to an older, more restrained tradition through the use of surprisingly traditional formats – flower paintings, portraits and landscapes.
