August Sander

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

29 September 2012 – 6 January 2013

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery hosts August Sander's 'unflinching' photographic record of the German people in the first half of the 20th century.

The 175 pictures from the Artist Rooms collection show members of the public in Germany as they lived through the First World War, the interwar years, the rise of the Nazi party, and the Second World War and its aftermath.

The show complements the venue's redisplay of its major permanent collection of early 20th-century German Expressionist art and includes and a wide range of archival material from Tate, National Galleries of Scotland, Anthony d’Offay and Gerd Sander.
