The Life and Work of Samuel Lucas
This talk looks at Samuel's work through the many paintings, drawings and sketches, and charts his course through helping establish the hospital, the town hall and the railway - and a few other things too.
Join us for a lunchtime talk at North Hertfordshire Museum by Alan Fleck.
Alan Fleck joined the staff of Hitchin Museum in May 1974, having completed an English degree at York University. Apart from the task of cataloguing the museum's collections, he set about re-mounting the collection of Lucas watercolours. They were then in elderly mounts in a wide range of sizes and shapes, and these were rationalised to a standard set of sizes. He also catalogued the numerous Lucas drawings in the collection. But Samuel Lucas Sr became a particular interest, as he kept popping up in various other guises in the town: a quiet but effective organiser of burgeoning infrastructure projects, a man of unquestionable integrity who could be relied on to get things done.
