Celebrate science in a cemetery? Why not? The wide range of rock types used for gravestones means that cemeteries offer a great opportunity to learn about geology. And geology is an excellent introduction to all sorts of other sciences, including chemistry, physics and engineering. Love history? Enjoy art? Whether ancient or modern, churchyards and cemeteries are wonderful places to explore these topics too.

Visit a cemetery with a hand lens or magnifying glass and you’ll be amazed at what you can see. In this illustrated talk geologists Nina Morgan and Philip Powell, Honorary Associates at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, will discuss the many interesting features you can see in your local burial ground. You’ll never look at cemeteries in the same way again.
