Join us for an introduction to wood engraving with Emily Johns, a printmaker and painter based in Hastings, Sussex.
Printmaking was a technique practised by the eclectic modern artist Eileen Mayo, currently being exhibited at Towner, and painter Eric Ravilious, whose works you can currently see in Bringing to Light: Jananne Al-Ani curates the Towner Collection. You'll draw inspiration from these two exhibitions and create your own wood engravings, learning about the history, techniques, tools and printmakers along the way.
Your tutor will be Emily Johns, a printmaker and painter based in Hastings, Sussex, and experienced wood engraving teacher.
Your first block of wood, tools and other materials such as inking slabs and paper will be provided, and you will be able to purchase additional wood blocks during the class.
We recommend booking on for the full course (please see separate event page) as you’ll have the benefit of improving your skills over the three workshops to fully understand the wood engraving medium.
