Free online screening of the BAFTA-winning documentary, For Sama, as part of Heritage Open Days.

For Sama is an epic and intimate journey filmed through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria. Waad al-Kateab tells the story of how she fell in love, married and gave birth to her daughter Sama, all whilst enduring the daily bombardment by the Syrian regime and Russian air force.

People are invited to share their thoughts as they watch via Twitter using the hashtag #ForSamaHOD.

This will be followed by an aftershow discussion via Zoom webinar with Afraa Hashem, one of the main characters in For Sama. She opened a series of schools in Aleppo, worked as a school director and a supervisor in psychological support centres. She chose to remain in the city of Aleppo with her family during the war, to help those around her. Afraa believes in the principles of her revolution; in freedom, dignity and social justice. This is what motivated her to continue the peaceful movement. Afraa now dedicates her time to raising awareness about the situation in Syria and participates in advocacy campaigns that contribute to alleviating the pain of the innocent civilians affected by the war.
