Syria’s recent history of civil war and interference from outside powers with the disastrous consequences for its historic monuments is nothing new. Tom Duncan’s lecture will seek to look at a selection of its historic treasures seen against the rise of famous Empires and the three religions ‘of the book’: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The fabulous city of Palmyra, fine early Christian monasteries, the great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and Crusader castles, such as Crac des Chevaliers, will all be featured.

This event has been organised by the Surrey Fundraising Committee Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
