The pre-Christmas fundraising lecture will be given by Sandra Pollard, a committee member and experienced freelance lecturer. It will explore the many beautiful representations in paintings of the annunciation of the birth of Christ to Mary and of her subsequent visit to Elizabeth, who was six months pregnant with the future John the Baptist. Both are important events in the Christian calendar and formed key topics in Christian art. What Sandra finds particularly interesting is the way in which different sections of the St Luke text are visually interpreted together with the wonderful depictions of the angel Gabriel and domestic interiors. The Visitation images are equally fascinating in their portrayal of two pregnant women, often showing an intimacy and affection which can be extremely moving.

This event has been organised by the Durham and Cleveland Fundraising Committee Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
