In the course of this evening, hosted by Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki and Mrs Rzegocki in the historic Polish Embassy on Portland Place designed by neo-classical architects James and Robert Adam, lecturer and recitalist Peter Medhurst draws links between the visual arts and the world of music-making. He discusses a range of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic paintings, and complements them with live keyboard music and song.
Paintings illustrated include musical scenes by Thomas Gainsborough, Johannes Vermeer and Johan Zoffany, with music selected from the works of William Byrd, Franz Schubert and, in particular, the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, whose Nocturnes Medhurst links to those of the painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
The presentation will be followed by drinks and canapés.
