What is jazz? Can enjoyment and appreciation of this exhilarating, yet sometimes seemingly intimidating art form be increased? This lecture will attempt to provide some strategies for listening to jazz music, in a way that is accessible both to those keen to ‘get into’ the music, and those who already enjoy listening to it.

Illustrated with classic recordings and live demonstrations this talk could be the start of a lifelong obsession! Dr Steve Kershaw’s syle and presentation has a dynamic quality and depth. As well as his work in the areas of Ancient Greece and Rome, Steve is an accomplished musician who plays and teaches widely in the UK, mainland Europe and Russia. The committee have asked him to break new ground by talking (with recorded and live musical illustration) about jazz, in an instructive and entertaining afternoon.
