The Jacobites, The Romance of a Lost Cause, With Nicholas Merchant.

In this talk Nicholas Merchant looks at the The Jacobites, the expelled descendants and followers of King James II, who forfeited his throne largely because of his Roman Catholic beliefs if not his own stubbornness. James II and his immediate descendants, the Old and Young Pretenders, became exiles at the court of France and in Rome, conspiring to regain their throne and finally frittering away their disappointed lives in family squabbles, adultery and alcohol. The final humiliation being that the last legitimate descendant, Henry, Cardinal of York, was obliged to accept a pension from his Hanoverian supplanter, George III.

Talk begins at 11.30am. Lunch (at preferential rate) to include wine, and coffee £22. Please indicate if you require lunch when booking. Ample parking. Sat Nav LS29 8PP
