Rosie Razzall is the Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Royal Collection Trust and the co-curator of the Canaletto and the Art of Venice exhibition currently showing at The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse until Sunday 21 October.
Canaletto is Venice's most famous view painter and made hundreds of paintings of the magical city to sell to Grand Tourists. His agent and dealer was the British Consul in Venice, Joseph Smith, who also collected many of the artist's finest works. In 1762 these artworks, along with many other works by fellow Venetian painters, entered the Royal Collection when they were bought by the young George III.
