The House of Automata

Visit and Talk | Address on booking

Saturday 17 March 2018 - 11:00 until 12:00

The House of Automata, a specialist antique automata company, is based at their restoration studio in Forres.

Automata are mechanical moving figures, designed to entertain and impress: singing birds in gilded cages, dancing dolls and dramatic moving pictures. They often feature in television programmes such as The Antiques Roadshow and in Hollywood films.

Run by Michael & Maria Start, horologist and artist respectively, the business started restoring automata for clients in London before moving to Scotland 12 years ago. They ran a shop in central London supplying automata to a client list of museums, celebrities and collectors from all around the world. The studio/workshop in Forres is a private treasure trove of automata and provides a much needed means of keeping these entertaining antiques alive and working.

Michael and Maria will open their workshop doors and present an informative talk with demonstrations of rare automata for a limited number of people.

This event has been organised by the Highlands Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
