A Celebration of Christmas in Music and Painting
Talk | Danny House
Wednesday 13 December 2017 - 13:45 until 16:30
An illustrated talk, with musical accompaniment, by Janet Canetty-Clarke, a Lecturer in Music associated with both Sussex and London Universities and who still regularly teaches or lectures around the country. She has previously been a Musical Director, conductor or pianist in numerous international settings.
Have you ever imagined Christmas without music or pictures? For many people Christmas is synonymous with the sounds and colours which have inspired composers and artists across the centuries to praise the birth of Jesus Christ. Starting with 'The Annunciation' (linked to the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols) the talk will move on to 'The Visitation' via the music of John Taverner, and then to 'The Nativity', releasing a plethora of sounds and colours. The visit of ‘The Three Wise Men’, ‘The Flight into Egypt’ and ‘The Massacre of the Innocents’ moves into 'Christmas Today'. Will it snow? Shall we plan a party or go to the ballet? Whatever we decide, Picasso's jolly 'Père Noel' will wish everyone a peaceful 2018.
Janet will illustrate her talk with slides of paintings but also with her own piano playing as well as with recorded music. Be prepared to be entertained as well as educated!
