Balintore Castle SOLD OUT

Talk and Tour | Address on booking

Thursday 6 July 2017 - 11:30 until 15:00

David Johnston had long wanted to restore a castle but his purchase of Inchdrewer Castle, 16th century, in Aberdeenshire fell through because the owner changed his mind at the last moment. Then he almost went for, but ultimately decided against, Auchans Castle, 16th century, even though this was for sale just five miles from his home town of Prestwick. Eventually he settled for Balintore Castle, 19th century, a large category A listed building in very poor condition just north of Lintrathen. The scale of the restoration was rather more than David had planned for, but given the beauty of the building and setting it felt worthwhile going out on a limb to save it.

Not being a man of unlimited means, David has had to alternate working to fund the restoration with periods of what he calls being a Gentleman of leisure, but in reality this time is spent in hard manual labour helping his builders or trawling the Internet and reclamation yards for materials.

More recently he has extended his searches to furnishings and fittings as the castle is now wind and watertight. This is a great luxury compared to the two years he lived in a caravan and had to collect rainwater.

This event has been organised by the Angus Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
