Welbeck Abbey - How the Dukes of Portland wined and dined

Lecture | Digby Hall

Sunday 11 December 2016 - 12:30 until 16:00

Drawing on the unrivalled and little known art collections at Welbeck Abbey, Philippa Glanville will describe how the Dukes of Portland and their servants and guests dined. Welbeck's famous but rarely seen plate collection includes among other objects a late 17th century Dutch silver water fountain made for William of Orange. Combined with manuscript receipts, daily lists of food and wine and descriptions of royal visits, this talk is a window into the domestic machine required to keep a pre-eminent family and more than 50 house staff in food and drink.

Philippa Glanville, a former Keeper of Metalwork at the V&A and a social historian, is also the author of Elegant Eating (V&A 2002) and The Art of Drink (V&A 2007) Philippa is a Trustee of the Art Fund.

This event has been organised by the Dorset Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
