Cambridge Colleges and the Fitzwilliam Museum - SOLD OUT

Guided Tour | Fitzwilliam Museum

Tuesday 12 July 2016 - 10:45 until 15:30

A morning walk with Rosie Zanders (Blue Badge Guide) and an afternoon visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Begin the walking tour with a visit to Emmanuel College, one of the 31 constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. Included in the visit are the Wren designed chapel, the Dining Hall and the beautiful gardens where you shall, no doubt, encounter some of the ubiquitous and very tame ducks who famously reside in and around the lake. Emmanuel College was founded in 1584 with the intention of educating Protestant preachers: in the early 17th century many Protestant graduates went from Emmanuel to the New World including John Harvard, after whom Harvard University is named.

Pembroke College Chapel was also designed by Wren, whose uncle Mathew Wren was a Fellow there and commissioned his nephew, a Professor of Astronomy in Oxford, to undertake the design by way of some ‘holy and pious employment’. The College gatehouse is the oldest in Cambridge, juxtaposed with 19th century architecture by Alfred Waterhouse. Pembroke College recently received an endowment of £35million from the estate be underway for a new court built in his memory.

The afternoon visit is to the Fitzwilliam Museum which celebrates its bicentenary of founding in 1816 by the bequest of Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion of his collection of outstanding artworks and library – all of which are housed in the Founders Building completed in 1848. It claims to be one of the great glories of the University and is today regarded as a museum of international stature with unique collections and a splendid building. The guided tour will take about an hour and will look at some of the museum highlights together with recent acquisitions that were supported by the Art Fund.

Meet at 10.45am at Emmanuel College main entrance on St Andrews Street, Opposite the John Lewis store Park & Ride stop. The Blue Badge guide here is Rosie Zanders. Lunch at your leisure and then meet at the Fitzwilliam Museum entrance hall at 2pm.

This event has been organised by the Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
