Sledmere monuments and memorials

Talk and Tour | Sledmere House

Thursday 23 June 2016 - 13:30 until 16:30

Meeting beside the Wagoners’ Museum at the entrance to Sledmere House, the group will have a guided tour with Dorothy Nott focusing on two remarkable monuments: the Wagoners’ Memorial, designed by Mark Sykes (1879–1919) to commemorate the Wolds Wagoners’ Special Reserve, a regiment he raised at the start of the First World War, and the Eleanor Cross, designed by Temple Moore and erected in 1896 by Tatton Sykes. The Cross was converted into a war memorial by Mark Sykes with the addition of brass plaques to some of the fallen.

There will be an opportunity to visit the Wagoners’ Museum, where there is a video of some of the Wagoners in old age, and the magnificent church, with its Memorial Book, before going into Sledmere House itself for tea and a short guided tour.

This event has been organised by the York & East Yorkshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
