The rediscovery of Arcadia - Capability Brown and the Pastoral Idyll

Lecture | Shrewsbury School

Wednesday 1 June 2016 - 13:00 until 15:30

Gareth Williams, Curator and Head of Learning at the Weston Park Foundation will share his considerable knowledge about the man many consider to be Britain's most famous landscape designer, sought after at the peak of his career all over England. Why was this and why was a natural landscape so much in fashion? The images that Brown, (dubbed Capability from his habit of assuring clients that their gardens had great capabilities), created with his landscapes in the 18th century are as deeply embedded in the English character as the paintings of Turner and the poetry of Wordsworth.

This event has been organised by the Shropshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
