Early German altarpieces and their difficult reception in England

Lecture | York Medical Society Rooms

Monday 22 February 2016 - 14:00 until 16:00

Nicola Sinclair, who is currently undertaking research on some of the National Gallery’s early German altarpieces, will trace the fascinating and complex history of how they were acquired in 1853 from a German collector, their hostile reception in England, their dispersal and finally reinstatement in the gallery. This is an opportunity to learn more about a little-known chapter in the history of German painting which, even today, arouses mixed responses.

This event has been organised by the York & East Yorkshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
