Goya: The Portraits

Lecture | McCrum Lecture Theatre

Friday 27 November 2015 - 18:30 until 20:00

Winter Open Lecture no. 2

Speaker: Dr Xavier Bray, Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator of the Dulwich Picture Gallery

The forthcoming exhibition curated by Dr Bray for The National Gallery, opening on 7 October 2015, will offer a re-appraisal of Goya’s genius as a portraitist, an aspect of his achievement often overlooked. Although more than a third of his easel paintings are portraits there has never been a comprehensive exhibition devoted to this aspect of his artistic output. His approach to painting a human likeness developed throughout his career, offering unconventional portrait types and often breaking traditional boundaries.

This event has been organised by the Cambridgeshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
