Illustrated talk by Michael Smith on Sir Ernest Shackleton

Talk | Danny House

Wednesday 25 November 2015 - 14:15 until 16:30

The Committee are delighted that Michael Smith has agreed to give an illustrated talk on the great Sir Ernest Shackleton at the wonderful location of historic Danny House in West Sussex.

Michael is an authority on Polar Expedition, he has written nine books, appeared in TV and radio documentaries and lectured at The Queen's Gallery Buckingham Palace, The National Geographical Society, the Scott Polar Research Institute and the National Museum of Ireland.

His biography 'By Endurance We Conquer' is the first major biography written on Shackleton in thirty or more years. The Observer listed it amongst the best biographies in 2014. Shackleton made four voyages of discovery into the Antarctic a century ago and his remarkable leadership inspires people to this day. He marched within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1909 and led the dramatic battle to survive after his ship Endurance was crushed by ice in 1914. His story is one of persistence and courage.

Michael will bring a few copies of his book which will be available to purchase on the day and hopefully he will have time to sign if you wish.

This event has been organised by the Sussex Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
