Revising Pevsner: thoughts on the new guide to Cambridgeshire

Lecture | McCrum Lecture Theatre

Friday 6 November 2015 - 18:30 until 20:00

Winter Open Lecture 1 (of 4)

Speaker: Dr Simon Bradley, joint editor of the Pevsner Guides.

What were the founding principles laid by Nikolaus Pevsner in the post-war years, and how have they been modified in the revising process, with special reference to the recent publication of the revised Cambridgeshire volume? Both city and county proved to be full of discoveries: the city especially for its recent architecture and Victorian heritage, the county for hundreds of village buildings, but also for country houses and even an entire village which Pevsner had missed. Revised volumes have recently been published for Bedfordshire/ Huntingdonshire and for Suffolk too, making this an exciting time for lovers of architecture in eastern England.

This event has been organised by the Cambridgeshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
