Four Suffolk Churches

Coach Visit | All Saints', Hawstead

Tuesday 15 September 2015 - 08:15 until 18:00

Chloe Cockerill will lead a tour of four Suffolk Churches in the vicinity of Bury St Edmunds. First the group explore All Saints Church at Hawstead which contains the largest number of funerary monuments of any Church in Suffolk – forty in all. Then on to Rushbrooke where, in the church of St Nicholas, refurbished in the 19th century, the group see seats facing each other and return stalls (as in a college chapel). There is also some fine early 16th century glass. Lunch will be at the Swan in Woolpit, followed by a visit to the magnificent church of St Mary, famous for its superb woodwork and splendid angel double hammer beam roof. At Hessett, the group explore the beautiful late medieval church of St Ethelbert with its fine porch and entrance and a treasure house of wall paintings inside. Finishing with a cup of tea in the Village Hall.

Transport: By coach collecting at 8.15am Milton Park and Ride, Cambridge, and 9 am Ely, Barton Road Car Park. Returning approximately 6pm
