Tour of St Andrews Church and Mells Manor Village
Tour | St Andrew's Church
Wednesday 9 July 2014 - 11:00 until 15:30
This special tour of the 15th-century St Andrews Church, Mells Manor and the surrounding village will be led by Michael McGarvie, who was the archivist for the Manor.
Starting in the medieval street leading up to St Andrews, we will first visit the church and churchyard, which includes works by Lutyens, Eric Gill and William Nicholson; and the graves of Siegfried Sassoon, Ronald Knox and Lady Violet Bonham-Carter.
We will then visit Mells Manor, by kind permission of Lord and Lady Oxford, which dates back to Abbots of Glastonbury. Very much still a family home, the Manor contains treasures including medieval Italian paintings and extensive gardens.
After lunch, we will be led on a tour of the village, which will include the medieval Tithe Barn, Lutyens War Memorial, weaver's cottages and some of the ancient village houses.
