Russia on canvas: the art of the Wanderers
Talk | Ripley Castle
Monday 25 November 2013 - 11:00 until 15:00
Following the visit to St Petersburg, Professor David Jackson will give an illustrated talk, centring on the late Tsarist Russian Art School known as the Wanderers. Established in the face of autocratic restrictions and state censorship, the Wanderers turned away from academic conventions to paint the real world around them: the hard lives of the peasantry, the fate of political activists, Russian history, landscapes and portraits of the nation’s cultural elite, such as Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky.
This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
