Lindisfarne Gospels Exhibition and the Oriental Museum

Visit and Talk | Oriental Museum

Wednesday 31 July 2013 - 08:30 until 18:00

We will travel by coach to Durham, where we will start the adventure with coffee in St. Chad's College. From there it is a short walk to the major exhibition on the Lindisfarne Gospels for which we will have pre-booked entry. This not-to-be-missed exhibition will display not only the gospels, on loan from the British Library, but also many other stunning Anglo-Saxon artefacts, books and manuscripts, including the St. Cuthbert's Gospel, which the Art Fund recently helped buy. After our visit we will have a specially arranged lecture by Professor Richard Gameson, the noted authority on the period.

A light buffet lunch will take place in St. Chad's College. There will then be some free time to visit the cathedral to see an exhibition on St. Cuthbert or perhaps explore the peninsula with its interesting buildings before we take the coach to the Oriental Museum. Here the curator will give an introduction to its important collections of oriental art and artefacts, the most comprehensive in the north of England, before we explore the recently re-furbished galleries. We will leave at 4.30pm for the return to York, arriving about 6.00pm.

This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund
