From the Mediterranean to the Mersey: Ceramic Study Day

Study Day | Potteries Museum & Art Gallery

Wednesday 13 March 2013 - 10:45 until 15:00

Claire Blakey of the Ceramics Department at the Potteries Museum recently received a Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grant from the Art Fund to enable her to carry out research into Italian maiolica, with particular reference to the important collection at the Potteries Museum. Claire will give a talk on these colourful, historical and documentary pieces and show some items from the collections not normally on display.

In the afternoon, ceramic historian Peter Hyland will describe the activities and products of the little-known Della Robbia Pottery of Birkenhead. This enterprise, founded by Harold Rathbone in 1894, was closely linked to the Arts and Crafts Movement and produced a range of artistic works, now very collectable.

This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
