Material Matters: The Art of Yinka Shonibare, MBE

Talk | The British Library Conference Centre

Wednesday 15 February 2012 - 18:30 until 20:00

The artist behind Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle has said his work is not about the representation of politics, but about the politics of representation – a challenge to established notions of ‘authenticity’. Join us as our panel of experts debate the multi-layered nature of Shonibare’s work, from the abstract symmetry of ‘Dutch Wax’ fabric to the history of empire.

Christine Riding, Head of Arts at the National Maritime Museum, chairs our distinguished panel: John Picton, Emeritus Professor of African Art at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, Jorrella Andrews, Head of the Visual Cultures Department at Goldsmiths College and Paul Goodwin, a former Tate curator and research fellow at Goldsmiths.

Donate to help bring Nelson's Ship in a Bottle to the National Maritime Museum.
