An Afternoon at the National Maritime Museum

Visit |

25 January 2012
7 March 2012 - 14:00 until 17:00

We will be welcomed by Dr Kevin Fewster, Director of the National Maritime Museum, who will show us the proposed site for Nelson's Ship in a bottle.

We will then explore three aspects of this remarkable institution. First, we will take a curator-led tour of the collection of fine art at the beautiful Queen's House which includes several ArtFunded works.

Secondly, we go behind the scenes in the Painting Conservation Studio. The collection of fine art includes more than 4,500 oil paintings, and it can take over 100 hours for conservators to clean and restore just one.

Thirdly, we investigate Nelson’s ‘Archive Journey Box' : extraordinary and moving letters, journals and other documents that record the realities of the Battle of Trafalgar and reveal day-to-day experiences in the Georgian Navy.

Guests will have tea in the Orangery of the Queen's House
