East Devon and West Somerset Churches

Visit | Tiverton

Tuesday 24 May 2011 - 08:30 until 17:00

Join the 'church crawl' led by Patrick and Frances Moule! There will be guided visits to a number of grand town churches with an emphasis on their role in the years leading up to the Reformation. The influence of local prelates and plutocrats can be traced in many of the churches. First, Tiverton which boasts the show chapel of the immensley wealthy and ostentatious merchant Greenaway; second, Cullompton, a parochial Devon church which benefited from the munificence of a clothier called Lane who paid for a wonderful fan-vaulted aisle to be built. Third, Ottery St Mary, a large collegiate church founded by Bishop Grandisson in the 14th Century and boasts another stunning fan vaulted aisle. Finally, Ilminster, the beneficiary of the great Wadham family. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with wine (provided) at Ottery St Mary.
