New Walk Museum & Art Gallery
The visit will begin with a talk on the history of Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Gallery. The building dates back to 1785 but began to be used as a museum in 1849 when the Literary and Philosophical Society presented its collections to the town.
There will then be a tour of the Museum’s rooms and galleries. It’s wide ranging collections and displays include Ancient Egyptian treasures and sarcophagi and an Iron Age Silver Treasure Hoard. An in depth tour of the Museum’s art collection will take place in the afternoon lead by the Senior Curator of Art. The New Walk boasts works by William Hogarth, Francis Bacon, Lowry, Kandinsky and much more.
