Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich
Christchurch Mansion is well known as an art gallery but it also boasts a panelled Great Hall with an arcaded minstrels' gallery, a further Great Hall rescued from an Elizabeth house, a state bedroom with a Georgian bed, Chinese lacquer-work, and rococo surroundings, and another room with wonderful early Renaissance panelling. The art collection features works by Gainsborough, Constable, Munnings, Wilson Steer, Cotman, Crome and many others. Hugh Belsey, formerly the Director of the Gainsborough Museum in Sudbury, will lead a tour of Christchurch. After lunch, a visit to St Mary le Tower which features interesting memorials, sword rests, and fine flushwork. Then, a visit to St Margaret's Church 'the most spectacular church in Ipswich' according to Pevsner. John Blatchly, local historian and author, will act as guide for the visits to both churches.
