The Italian Renaissance Home

|

Wednesday 16 March 2011 - 14:30 until 15:30

This lecture looks at Renaissance manuals on healthy living. Harmonious sounds, cheerful colours, pleasant scents, precious stones and images of landscapes all had a role to play in the taming of negative passions of the soul. As a topic for scholarship, the study of the sensory character of interiors designed for mental and emotional well-being has so far been neglected. The subject raises important questions as to the deeper significance of the domestic arts, whose meaning is mostly associated with aesthetic and social concerns.
