Visit: From Steep Hillsides: Ancient Rock Carvings from Dazu, China

|

Thursday 3 March 2011 - 10:00 until 14:00

An opportunity to see the ancient rock carvings from Dazu, China.

The steep hillsides of the Dazu world heritage site near Chongqing contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century. The carvings comprise some 50,000 figures in total. They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period.
National Museum, Cardiff is the only venue exhibiting some of these important carvings after a number had become detached from their original setting. Replicas of some of the key sculptures still in situ and impressive large scale images are on display at the exhibition. There will be coffee and an introductory talk propr to viewing the exhibition.
