Lecture: 'Russia: from Icon to the Avant Garde', by Marina Vaizey

| Burchatts Barn

Russian art and culture were firmly rooted and sustained by the traditional icon, both in churches and domestic settings. Catherine the Great used art as propaganda; while 19th century Russia, much influenced by the West, saw an explosion in art, with its own styles and subjects, particularly its unique landscape. Some of the greatest early 20th century artists, from the painters Kandinsky and Malevich, to photographers such as Rodchenko, were great innovators who are still revered.
