Guided tour: Highgate Western Cemetery, London

| Highgate Western Cemetery

Highgate Cemetery is a fascinating resting place for many prominent figures (and less well-known people) from Victorian times onwards. Amongst the most well known occupants of the cemetery are Karl Marx, George Eliot, Sir Ralph Richardson, Christina Rosetti and Elizabeth Siddal. The cemetery has many features of interest as well as the memorials themselves including an outstanding collection of structures designed by Stephen Gems and James Bunstone Bunning, both of whom were noted Victorian cemetery designers. Highgate Cemetery is now a Grade I listed park with a wealth of flora, bird and animal life. Over its 150 years of existence the burial site and its natural setting have become inseparable and it is this, perhaps, that makes it unique. See www.highgate-cemetery.org.uk for more information
