Hilary Guise gives an illustrated lecture on Mary Nisbet, Countess of Elgin, who was born and brought up in Archerfield. The richest heiress in Scotland of her time, she visited the Ottoman Empire in 1799 as the wife of the Ambassador Extraordinaire, the 7th Earl of Elgin, and was responsible for bringing the Smallpox Vaccination to the Middle East. Most importantly, she financed the removal of the Marbles from the Parthenon to England.
