Visit with tour: 'Hidden Highlights - Personal Preferences', Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Even those of us who regularly visit galleries and are seriously interested in art have to admit how easy it is to fall into bad habits. We are very selective about what we give our time to and regularly walk past work without giving it a chance to affect or engage let alone challenge us.
Brendan Flynn, Keeper of Fine Art at BMAG will share his knowledge and love of some of the wonderful paintings in the collection to help unlock the intentions of both artist and patron. Look at narrative, context, symbolism and technique to arrive at a completely fresh appreciation of the work. Many treasures of the gallery have been purchased with help from The Art Fund over many years and, at the generous request of the gallery, all the money raised by this visit will go directly to The Art Fund to help future purchases and projects.
There will be a rare opportunity to examine and discuss some of the 3,000 or so rarely seen prints and drawings in the stores including works by Burne-Jones, Blake and Turner.
