Lecture: 'Stowe - Britain's Forgotten Palace' by Dr Jonathan Foyle

| The Guildhall

Lord Cobham, as a newly created peer in 1718, spent the next 30 years directing Vanbrugh, Kent and Capability Brown to design a unique paradise of temples & rotundas within his garden. The house, overlooking this beautiful landscape, was enlarged to twice its original size and boasts a magnificent Oval Hall with frieze and coffered dome. Dr Foyle, well known for his television presentations, will outline the history of this palatial palace known to contemporaries as the ‘finest seat in England.’ Later the seat of the Marques of Buckingham it was sold in the early 20th Century to become the school it now is.
