Lecture: 'Gods and Goths - Horace Walpole and the English Country House', by Dr Tom Duncan (The Menuhin Hall)

| The Menuhin Hall

Horace Walpole, one of the 18th century’s most fascinating personalities, son of our first Prime Minister, had access to every development of note in politics and the arts. Maturing as taste swung from Wren’s Baroque to the “antique” New Palladian style of Lord Burlington and Kent, he saw every new building with a fresh and perceptive eye. His own contribution was the commissioning of one of the most important “Gothick” buildings of its time, Strawberry Hill. The lecture will complement the exhibition at The V&A. (6 March – 4 July 2010)
